Quilca–Matarani Highway, Peru

Quilca–Matarani Highway, Peru
The Quilca–Matarani highway, located in a desert area of southern Peru, crosses several ravines that are prone to activation during the rainy season. This condition required the installation of 36-inch diameter stormwater culverts, over which embankments of up to 20 meters in height were projected above the crown. Additionally, proximity to the sea imposed specific requirements related to corrosion resistance, directly influencing the selection of conveyance materials.
To address both challenges—high embankment loads and an aggressive environment—the installation of HDPE pipes with corrugated external walls and smooth internal surfaces was selected. This solution maintains a constant wall thickness even under large fill heights, unlike other traditional materials. Furthermore, its corrosion resistance ensures durable and reliable performance, optimizing the service life of hydraulic infrastructure under extreme conditions.
