Leaching pads are areas specially designed for mineral recovery through a controlled liquid extraction process. In this context, geosynthetics play a crucial role, acting as impermeable barriers for the safe containment of leaching solutions. They also function as efficient drainage systems, thus ensuring environmental protection.

Waterproofing of Pad 1 - Phase III, Cerro Verde Mining Company, Arequipa, Peru.
With an area of approximately 75 hectares, Phase III of the Cerro Verde Mining Pad 1 leaching facility in the Uchumayo district of Arequipa represents a key advance in ensuring the operational and environmental safety of its copper and molybdenum production processes. In this phase, a waterproofing system was implemented that combined geomembranes with GCL, which provides a highly effective hydraulic barrier against liquid and gas infiltration, surpassing the capacity of low-permeability soils.
Its ease of installation, with no compaction or transport of large volumes of clay required, significantly reduced construction times and costs associated with earthworks. Furthermore, the GCL could be installed on steep rock slopes below the geomembrane, improving the project’s waterproofing performance.
