Expansive soils experience significant volume variations in response to changes in humidity. Rehabilitation of the Puerto Rey – Montería Highway, Córdoba, Colombia
In response to the need to restore the structural performance of the road, longitudinal cracks generated by active clays, particularly kaolinite, were identified. Although this clay is in the low activity range, it was sufficient to compromise a lightweight structure such as flexible pavement, causing premature deformations.
As a solution, multiaxial geogrids (triangular in shape) were implemented. Their greater dimensional stability compared to biaxial geogrids allowed for optimized pavement performance. This technology reduced rutting and mitigated the formation of new cracks, improving the road’s durability.
