The use of geosynthetics for bridge abutment protection represents a highly effective technique for controlling soil particle drag caused by water flow, preventing scour and foundation failure. These solutions are efficient, easy to install, and adaptable to various hydraulic and geotechnical conditions. A clear example is the use of geocells, which, due to their flexible nature, can accommodate scour depths without compromising structural integrity. In this way, geosynthetics provide durable and robust protection for critical infrastructure.

S-27 Bridge Protection, Cajamarca, Peru
As part of the modernization of road access over the Río Grande, Compañía Minera Yanacocha replaced an embankment with culverts with a higher-capacity structure: the S-27 Bridge, supported by two 10-meter-high abutments. To ensure abutment stability and durability under local hydraulic conditions, a mechanicall stabilized earth (MSE) system with welded wire mesh facing was executed.
The first four meters from the base were protected with shotcrete, reinforcing the structure against shear forces generated by water flow. This integrated solution significantly enhanced abutment protection, ensuring structural performance and operational continuity of the mining access under demanding conditions.
