Water reservoirs are key infrastructures for efficient water resource management, allowing large volumes of water to be stored and released as needed for agricultural irrigation, human consumption, energy generation, and other uses. To ensure their long-term operation, geosynthetics such as geomembranes or GCL are integrated into the project design to reduce or prevent infiltration and limit interaction with the soil. These sustainable solutions not only optimize waterproofing but also reduce construction times and costs compared to traditional alternatives such as reinforced concrete and rockfill.

Construction of the irrigation system - Pallcca Dam, Ayacucho, Peru.
As part of the commitment to improve water infrastructure and sustainable agricultural development in the region, the construction project for the Pallcca dam, located in the district of Quinua, Ayacucho, represents a significant advance in the efficient management of water resources. With an investment of 50 million soles and a storage capacity of 1 million cubic meters of water, this irrigation system can supply more than 1,500 hectares of crops and directly benefit 1,200 farming families in the districts of Quinua and Huamanguilla.
The dam was waterproofed upstream with a geomembrane and lined with an additional layer of geocells filled with concrete, an innovative solution that ensures the long-term protection and durability of the geomembrane. In turn, this solution contributes to optimizing costs and construction times compared to conventional systems such as reinforced concrete and rockfill, consolidating its position as a sustainable and efficient technical solution for agricultural development projects.
