The use of geosynthetics in bridge abutment protection is an extremely effective technique capable of controlling the entrainment of soil particles caused by water flow, preventing scours and failures at the abutment base. Furthermore, these solutions are efficient, easy to install, and adaptable to various hydraulic and geotechnical conditions.
A clear example is geocells, whose flexible nature allows them to adapt to scour levels without compromising their structural integrity. In this way, geosynthetics ensure long-lasting and robust protection for vital infrastructure.

Protection of the S-27 Bridge, Cajamarca, Peru.
As part of the modernization of road access over the Río Grande, the Yanacocha Mining Company replaced a culverted embankment with a higher-capacity structure: Bridge S-27, supported by two 10-meter-high abutments. To ensure the abutments’ stability and durability in the area’s hydraulic conditions, a reinforced soil system (RSS) with a welded mesh facade was implemented.
The first 4 meters from the base were protected with shotcrete, reinforcing the structure against the shear stresses generated by the flow of water. This integrated solution significantly improved the protection of the abutments, ensuring the bridge’s structural performance and the op
