Tailings dams and ponds are fundamental structures in mining operations for the safe storage of waste generated during mineral extraction and processing. Their waterproofing using specialized geosynthetics plays a decisive role in preventing seepage that could compromise physical stability or impact groundwater sources.
In addition to minimizing the risk of soil and groundwater contamination, the use of complementary geosynthetics such as geogrids contributes to reinforcing the strength of the foundation soils or dam raisings, particularly in construction methods such as centerline or downstream methods, increasing overall efficiency and operational safety.

Waterproofing of the Tailings Dam – Mina Justa Project, Ica, Peru
Waterproofing of the Tailings Dam – Mina Justa Project, Ica, Peru
Waterproofing of the Tailings Dam – Mina Justa Project, Ica, Peru
Under challenging conditions such as those of the coastal desert of San Juan de Marcona, ensuring the waterproofing of tailings dams in mining projects requires high-performance technical solutions and operational efficiency.
For Stage II of the Tailings Dam at the Mina Justa Project, approximately 20 hectares were waterproofed using geomembranes designed to provide a reliable and durable barrier against tailings seepage. These geomembranes are characterized by their high resistance to chemical and physical degradation, allowing them to maintain
long-term integrity in aggressive environments.
Their rapid installation optimized resources and construction schedules, while their flexibility allowed adaptation to site geometry. In this way, the solution not only reinforced the project’s environmental safety, but also added value in terms of sustainability and impact control within one of the most sensitive stages of the mining process.
