Geosynthetics are essential polymeric materials in road construction. They are used to improve the strength, stability, and durability of roads, fulfilling key functions such as reinforcement, filtration, drainage, protection, and separation. Their growing popularity in recent decades is due to their multiple benefits: ease of installation, low cost, and a smaller environmental footprint.

Reinforcement of draining granular bases at Antamina Mine, Ancash, Peru.
The existing mining road exhibited high levels of deformability due to deficiencies in surface drainage, resulting in low serviceability of the roadway. This condition directly affected the daily performance of earthmoving operations, increasing operating costs and reducing project efficiency. To stabilize the road and restore its functionality, a reinforcement system was implemented using drainage granular material in combination with geosynthetics, including non-woven geotextile and HDPE geocells. This solution improved load-bearing capacity, facilitated drainage, and controlled deformation, ensuring a more stable, safe, and efficient road for mining operations.
