Las Torres Road Interchange Project: A Solution to Improve Urban Mobility

THE PROBLEM: The project to improve and expand urban mobility services at the intersection of Av. Ramiro Prialé and Av. Las Torres, through the construction of a bypass in Lurigancho, had to face demanding traffic conditions.

This area handles a high volume of vehicles, many of them heavy-tonnage, generating constant loads on the pavement. In addition, traffic congestion causes vehicles to remain stopped or move slowly for extended periods, increasing pressure on the surface.

Added to this are the high temperatures in the area, which require a pavement capable of withstanding heat without deforming. Given this scenario, a technical solution was needed to help prevent premature failures and reduce future maintenance closures.

THE SOLUTION: TDM recommended the use of a polymer-modified hot mix asphalt with SBS Betutec PG 76-22 + Adhesol 10000. This recommendation was developed under the Balanced Mix Design (BMD) methodology, Approach A. Through this process, the most suitable modified asphalt binder for the project’s conditions was determined by means of a Performance Grade (PG) study, complemented by Marshall design and performance evaluations under the Superpave methodology.

This resulted in a robust and technically sound mix design suited to the project’s demands.

BENEFITS:

  • Specific design: asphalt mix developed according to the project’s technical, climatic, and traffic conditions.
  • Greater durability: the use of modified asphalt contributes to a longer pavement service life.
  • Reliable performance: analyses under the Superpave methodology allow for better prediction of resistance to fatigue, permanent deformation, and moisture-induced damage.
