Paving at the New Jorge Chávez Airport under FAA Regulations

THE PROBLEM: The construction of the new runway at Jorge Chávez International Airport demanded the most rigorous engineering standards at a global level. Unlike conventional roads, airport pavements must withstand:

  • Tire inflation pressures and aircraft weights significantly higher than those of ground transportation.
  • Strict compliance with FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations, whose tolerances and quality requirements far exceed national standards such as the EG-2013.
  • Zero margin for error to prevent material detachment that could compromise aircraft engines.

THE SOLUTION: TDM proposed implementing a high-strength structural package using 10 cm of Polymer-Modified Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) with next-generation polymers.

The differentiating elements of the solution were:

  • The use of Polymer-Modified Asphalt (PMA) specifically designed to meet the viscosity, elastic recovery, and softening point parameters required by the FAA.
  • Material selection and design following strict international protocols for airports, ensuring a denser, more impermeable, and fatigue-resistant mix.
  • The incorporation of our Betutec line enabled superior mix cohesion, ensuring that the binder withstands the tangential stresses generated during aircraft braking and takeoff.

BENEFITS:

  • By exceeding EG-2013 requirements and aligning with FAA standards, a pavement with an extended service life and reduced need for corrective maintenance is guaranteed.
  • The robustness of the modified mix minimizes the risk of cracking and permanent deformation (rutting) under the climatic and load conditions of Callao.
  • The benefits of the Betutec system allow the pavement to maintain its flexibility and resistance, efficiently absorbing extreme dynamic loads.
  • The project is positioned as a benchmark for modern airport infrastructure, regulated under the same standards as the world’s most important airports.
