Modified asphalts
THE PROBLEM:
The Montalvo Bridge Consortium had to carry out the construction of the new Montalvo Bridge following the collapse of the previous structure, which was affected by mudflows and flooding, interrupting traffic in the area. This project, located at km 1146 of the Panamericana Sur highway, in the district of Moquegua, required the paving of ramps and approach lanes, access roads, and the Montalvo Bridge itself.
Therefore, this project presented a high level of complexity, as it had to ensure resilience against rainfall, rising river levels, and mudflows, maintain traffic continuity during construction, and comply with high engineering standards for durable and safe infrastructure.
THE SOLUTION:
TDM proposed implementing hot mix asphalt using polymer-modified asphalt SBS Betutec IC PG 76-22 + Adhesol 10000. This solution was recommended after a Performance Grade (PG) study that considered 9 years of maximum and minimum temperatures at the project location, allowing the selection of the most suitable binder for the climate and traffic conditions it needed to withstand.
BENEFITS:
The hot mix asphalt, produced with the SBS Betutec IC PG 76-22 polymer-modified asphalt binder, met all the technical requirements of the Marshall volumetric design and Superpave performance criteria. This made it possible to obtain a highly resistant and durable pavement, with high stiffness modulus and outstanding elastic recovery, capable of withstanding high temperatures and extreme climate and traffic conditions, thus ensuring safety and long-term infrastructure continuity.
