Pavement with Polymer-Modified Asphalt Mixtures

THE PROBLEM: The total project length (428 km) was divided into the following sub-sections:

  • Dv. Quilca – Dv. Arequipa (Repartición) (121.549 km)
  • Dv. Matarani – Dv. Moquegua (158.234 km)
  • Dv. Ilo – Tacna (113.310 km)
  • Tacna – La Concordia (35.520 km)

Given the traffic volume this concession would sustain, the conventional asphalt mixture proposed in the initial engineering study did not meet the performance requirements for a long-term beneficial solution. Furthermore, the solution involved placing a 4 cm asphalt layer (thin thickness). The project included sections located at long hauling distances (over 4 hours), which caused the asphalt mixture to cool down, preventing the achievement of the desired compaction densities.

THE SOLUTION: TDM proposed a high-performance solution to the client, offering long-term durability and ensuring concession performance over a longer period. The polymer-modified asphalt combined with next-generation warm mix additives resolved the compaction issues.

BENEFITS:

  • Improves asphalt mixture performance.
  • Reduces thermal susceptibility.
  • Reduces moisture-induced susceptibility.
  • Allows the asphalt mixture to be transported over long distances and for extended periods.
  • Allows maintaining a single plant location.
  • Resistance to rutting, fatigue cracking, and thermal cracking.
  • Improves adhesion with the aggregate.
